Every profession has its own jargon – valuable short-hand to describe sometimes complex concepts concisely in a way that insiders can understand and use. The difficulty is that modern businesses employ concepts and techniques that cross functional boundaries, leading to confusion and misunderstanding among those who are not experts. At worst, jargon can be used to hide a lack of true understanding or to create an impression of deep knowledge that does not exist in reality.
Where we have used terms in our articles that may be unfamiliar to the lay reader, we have included an explanation of our interpretation of them in this paper, together with related terms that you may come across. The exact definition of some terms for emerging ideas and technologies is still evolving, so we will try to keep them up to date as much as possible.
